Alright. It speaks to my insecurity and depression that I went from “Do all the panels!” to “crawl in a hole and die in a socially conscious way!” in the space of 15 minutes. But that’s kind of nutter. The overwhelming majority of the feedback seems to be on the whole positive, so we’ll try and focus on that and make some plans for the future.
In my ideal world, here are some of the things I’m considering for AnimeUSA:
- Rape Culture in Anime (18+) - I want to explore the links between Hentai rape tropes and mainstream ecchi anime. I think showing up how misogynistic porn tropes end up in regular anime is a worthy endeavor. AND I get to show porn. Porn.
- Bad Touch - How anime harms the concept of consent. This is the under 18 version of the above panel. The bent will be slightly different and focus more on how anime characters have a habit of violating each others’ personal space along with some negative ideas anime has about men’s sexuality.
- Sexism in Anime and Anime Fandom - This is the Otakon panel, updated and improved after post-mortem with Lauren.
- Actually, Your Imouto Hates You: The Pernicious Sexism and Objectification in Mainstream Anime During the Era of Moe - If I want to talk for an hour about everything wrong with anime, this would be it. In some magical christmasland, they’d schedule this across from an LGBTQ or other safe-space kind of panel so that I could gather and fight with all the trolls about how they are bad people for continuing to buy shows like Upotte or The Ambition of Oda Nobunaga while the other panels continue unmolested. At the point where I skewer The World God Only Knows, I will probably have resigned myself to an honorable death at a convention. ^_^
I need to start figuring out which of these will fly. I think doing more panels on anime itself will serve me better. Anyone with a critical eye and long “watched” list can do text analysis. That’s how this blog started. Maybe it’s time to go back to basics. :)
