[Space Pirates in uniform clean guns before combat action. While most of them are men, two women can be seen in the middle of the shot, picture provided by Vucub Caquix]
SO. I’ve been talking to Vucub Caquix who runs Altair & Vega about the concept of the default male. I was INITIALLY reminded of the idea BY this series.
Mouretsu Pirates is an awesome show that starts a spunky high school girl thrust into the role of Space Pirate Captain by circumstances of her birth. While the bridge is populated equally by men and women all the normal pirates aboard Marika’s (the main character) ship, Bentenmaru, appeared to be male. Which is, of course, silly. If women are rising to reasonable rank within the ship SOME of the general crew have to be women. The disjoint is what’s generally referred to as the default male. Where all the “masses” are men and women only appear as exceptional characters.
Well, this screen shot proves it wrong. It’s a far cry from the 50/50 set up on the bridge, but at least the show knows that there has to be some diversity among the crew to support women rising to command positions.
